Everyone who has been a driver for very long at all knows the panic that comes along with the initial lighting of the “check engine” light on the dashboard. Of course, the recommendation is that you immediately take your car to a service station at the first possible chance. In most situations, there is really no way to know what causes the light to come on, or what the actual problem is.
However, now you have the Torque app for Android, and one of the great many things it can do is check those fault codes to give you a better understanding of what the problem is.
In addition to the application itself, you will also need to have an OBD2 (On Board Diagnostics) Bluetooth adapter. This will plug into the diagnostic socket of the car. This is found on most 2000 model or newer vehicles, but make sure to check the specific information for your own vehicle. Once the adapter is plugged in, and connected to the ECU (Engine Control Unit), it will pair with your device. From there, you can access all the features the app provides for you.
Here are just a few of the features that are helpful for just about everybody:
This is only a minimal list, as you will have many more features once you dive into the app itself.
It is important to know that some features are limited. For example, only cars featuring MAF and MAP sensors can support the Turbo Boost feature on the app. Some cars that have these are Audi and VW’s. Normally there is a wide manufacturer list available, but this be primarily depend on the ECU of your own vehicle. There are various Bluetooth adapters that will work with this app and it’s often true that what you pay for is what you get. While cheaper models are available, the cheaper they are, the more you will depend on luck that it works as it should.
Available on Google Play Store, Torque Pro is the featured product. However, if you would like to try it for free, there is a free “Lite” version that has a basic feature set. No matter which one you choose to go with, there will still be a bit of investment on your part, as the Bluetooth adapter will still be needed.
